What kind of boat? Aft cockpit or center?

I did a Monitor installation on a friend's boat. He's happy with it,
but although the Monitor is the "classic" wind vane I'm not thrilled
by the lines running to the wheel.

The Hydrovane seems to get good reviews from owners. No personal
    experience.

I assume your boat is not a speed demon, but it is worth bearing in
mind that Evans Starzinger opined that faster boats get less utility
from wind vanes due to apparent wind being consistently forward as
speeds rise, making tuning the vane for a particular course more
difficult. It must be doable in most conditions since some pretty fast
ocean racers have managed. I couldn't track down Evan's original
statement to reference; it may have been in a discussion on the CSBB
    board ...

    sail fast, dave
