We had an awning that covered the boat from the mast
aft that we used at anchor. We put a thru-hull on
each side of the boom. When it rained, we'd let the
dirt and salt wash off for a few minutes then run the
water to the tank with vinyl hose. We tied a line
around the thru-hulls and pulled them down to make a
depression and stabilize the awning. We caught all
the water we used in over a year in French Polynesia.
We didn't treat the water we caught, it's essentially
    distilled water.

Water makers are nice but require a lot of juice
and/or running the engine. They are also finicky and
require care in using. Easy to mess them up and
    repairs are expensive.
