Any problems with the small hose being above the engine and draining back to
the engine side of the manifold?

    Kind Regards

What I meant was that I removed the little ball and spring from the vented
loop 'thingie', installed a fitting that allowed me to connect a small
diameter hose to it. I then led the to the cockpit and exited above a
scupper. When the water flowed I knew the raw water pump was operating.
When I shut the engine down, the vacuum was broken immediately- no moving
    parts.
    Simple.
