As per Volvo, Westsail installed a very elegant bronze
anti-siphon loop valve in the raw water intake of my
engine. The first time I used the engine, the
anti-syphon valve stuck closed. Voila, the engine
filled with water. I got a new engine under warranty.
Never ever depend on an anti-syphon valve to protect
your engine. The small diameter bleed line led
overboard or to a cockpit drain is the way to go.
Don't think leading it to the bilge is the way to go,
however.
By guts, think he means the little ball that's
supposed to slide up and down to stop water from
escaping when the engine is running and break the
vacuum when the engine is off.
