There is a device we use on pump shafts where the packing has grooved
or pitted the shaft. It is called Speedy Sleeve and is available in
various sizes. It is a thin-walled cylinder with a driving flange for
forcing it onto a shaft. The sleeve is pressed on and a sealer cements
it to the shaft. Once in place, the flange is removed. This will give
you a new running surface in the stuffing box. Be sure you choose the
    correct material.
