Tax issues aside, once you leave the US, you are
better off with Coast Guard Documentation. In 3 years
of cruising no country has asked for state
registration and we feel if a state registration was
all that was produced, it could cause problems. The
largest difficulty we have is keeping that annual
documentation up to date.
Additionally, no country has asked for dinghy
registration, although there are rumors that some
places might ask for proof of purchase for the
outboard engine.
We've let our NY state registration lapse for the
sailboat and the dinghy, but we do keep copies of
proof of purchase and sales taxes paid, primarily for
when/if we come back to the States.
