    Tax issues aside, once you leave the US, you are
    better off with Coast Guard Documentation. In 3 years
    of cruising no country has asked for state
    registration and we feel if a state registration was
    all that was produced, it could cause problems. The
    largest difficulty we have is keeping that annual
    documentation up to date.

    Additionally, no country has asked for dinghy
    registration, although there are rumors that some
    places might ask for proof of purchase for the
    outboard engine.

    We've let our NY state registration lapse for the
    sailboat and the dinghy, but we do keep copies of
    proof of purchase and sales taxes paid, primarily for
    when/if we come back to the States.
