Hi Jeff,
I'm coming to the US on Monday morning as early as possible with the old
shaft. I have a number of things that need to get done and will be there
all day running errands. I've been told they will have it ready by COB
so I won't have to stay overnight. Don't want to have to have a second
day on the rental car from here; _expensive_!
Not "dissing" the PYI/PSS unit. It just isn't for us since we have such
restricted access to the unit. I needed a _heavy_ unit that has a track
record for not failing under heavy stress/workloads and also one where I
had a replacement solution in place without hauling out or uncoupling
the shaft. I had not heard of Strong Seal before either and was leaning
to LasDrop. Guillermo, here, told me about Strong Seal and, on
investigation, found that it fit our needs better. The LasDrop unit is
supposedly essentially a copy of the Strong Seal unit. For us, it is
simply a better fit. I'm happy you're happy with the PYI/PSS unit. I
have heard from people who are not all that happy with theirs for
various reasons but they seem to center around the bellows being
somewhat fragile in their installation location with regards to the
surrounding area and what is kept there or the wear on the seal
(probably due to alignment issues I'd guess). They are going to other
units or back to the traditional.
The new Teflon and Gore-Tex materials look good. Right now, we just
needed to go the other way. We will use the Teflon for the rudder shaft
though since I have that and can monitor it _much_ easier.
How long will you be here before going south? I think we have at least
another week to get things done and then get everything stowed, fueled,
take on water, etc. before we can go. Looks like we will miss carnival
in Mazatlan after all. :-( On the bright side, one or more bullets
dodged as a result of all this and that is certainly a good thing.
