Hi Rick and Lynn,
I'll be seeing you in Ensenada soon. I'm leaving SD on Tuesday or possibly
Wednesday (my crew is sick, both of them, but getting better). If have the
shaft by Monday evening I could bring it down on Beatrix if you need me to.
I have to disagree with you about the PYI/PSS unit. The Strong Seal may
well be better -- I am not familiar with it. And I'm not sure if your
"dissing" of the PSS is because of personal experience or hearsay, but my
personal story is that I have had the PSS system for 9 years without any
drama or failure. The PSS only needs "burping" if it's been out of the
water, and if you use the water injection option (needed on my center
cockpit boat with it's long shaft) there is no burping required; other then
routine inspection no maintenance has been necessary. I will be replacing
the bellows soon just because it's been on for 9 years, and I'll keep the
original as a spare.
Frankly, I've been intrigued with the discussion on the use of Gore-Tex and
Teflon packing, which is supposed be dripless without using a shaft seal.
If the product had been available 9 years ago I certainly would have tried
it before going to a shaft seal.
Interestingly enough, I installed the PSS while IN THE WATER. I have a
double Cutless bearing installation which keeps the water flow down, and I
was able to work the shaft and prop back far enough to slide the PSS on from
the other end. Some water leaked in but the bilge pump kept up with it
until the installation was done.
Best regards,
Jeff
