We don't have "experience" but are contemplating essentially the same
trip next year. Our boat is a 43' cat that is in its final year of
charter in Belize. We will pick her up 10/08, sail to Rio Dulce for an
annual haul out and then sail back to Florida for some refitting prior
to exploring the rest of the Caribbean. Given our destination in
Florida, the route is fairly well defined - up the coast of Belize and
Mexico to Isla Mujeres and then East to the Dry Tortugas and Key West.
Even if you are not headed for Florida, I would suggest a similar route
and then using Bruce van Sant's "The Thornless Path to Windward"
technique to hop along the coast of Cuba to Eastward.
But, of course, first hand experience would be a lot better. I do know
(from a friend, not personally) that trying to sail East from Rio is NOT
what you want to do - especially in a cat.
    Fair Winds,
    Mark Parker
