Yes, I agree with you about sep. units....Ihave not interconnected any two items on my boat....have been cruising , single handed for almost 6 years now...even two transpacs.
Separate units are not as handy as a "all inclusive" one unit, however, if one item fails and you have a "all inclusive" UNIT...you have lost everything.
Example:" My GPS failed in mid pacific....I traced the problem and found it was a simple item. The mfr had used a "screw on" coax connector, instead of a solder on connector. So if you are cruising this might be something you would check out before leaving.
GPS antenna....using a small cottage container, and about 4" of wire I made a groundplane gps antenna that runs rings around the "patch" antennas used in some gps units
