Judy,
We too are planning on crossing the Pacific (again, but this time will be on our own boat not someone else's) Any way I have thought about the portable H20 Maker, and after some consideration it is not very high on my list. Reasons are as follow's
1. Just upgraded our Life Raft and got a 6 man Offshore - food and water for 6 people for 7 days (there are only 4 of us Myself, My Wife and the two Kids - currently 5 & 4
2. The new EPIRB with GPS takes less than 30sec to send your exact position to Search and Rescue. - Hopefully you won't need it!!!!!!!
3. Having run boats between NZ and Aus including 2 Pacific Crossing and seen and tried the portable H2O Maker, personally I would rather conserve my energy. As don't let the pump type fool you - to get about a glass of water is alot of work and a lot of energy spent. This was a test ONLY never had to really use it.
4. If your SSB, VHF, etc is all set up you would be surprised at how many boats/ships are all part of GMDSS.
Please don't get me wrong - I'll probably still get one for piece of mind, but just right now it's not to high on the list. Modern technology has come a long way over the past few years
Hope this helps
Cameron

Subject: [world-cruising] Desalination system for life raft/ditch bag
Since this group is so quiet, I will start a topic. We are
considering cruising the South Pacific next year. This would be our
first time crossing an ocean and we obviously would want to add a
desalination system of some kind to our ditch bag/life raft. I am
just starting to research what units are currently on the market (with
the slowest internet connection that you can imagine). Saw the recent
posting about the new system using sugar and thought this might be a
good topic to raise on this group list.
Any recommendations? Obviously want something small with capability
of potable water production sufficient for 2 people.
