Good point, Jeff. But I would be willing to bet that most of us who
do often use satellite connections have a slightly different method of
handling these email lists. We turn off all email from sailing group
lists when preparing to leave on a passage when we know there will be
no broadband internet access. It is simple enough to change back to
receiving email when you arrive at your destination if you should so
choose.
Personally, I have found that simply going to the Yahoo! group website
and reading the postings whenever we have broadband access is a much
better way of enjoying these lists while cruising. Internet access is
some ports is too slow to bother with this type thing.
BTW, when receiving email via satellite phone we first connect and
download only headers. That enables us to mark only those messages
that we are interested in receiving immediately via the slow and
somewhat expensive satellite connection. All the other messages can
wait until we again have a faster connection in port. Just assume that
most people using sat phones do this same process.
