I believe that a well-designed, carefully maintained mast and rigging
are important. Whoever told the O.P. that only keel-stepped masts are
acceptable offshore had to base that comment more on opinion than
fact. There are lots of great boats out there in both configurations.
That particular characteristic just is not relevant.
My deck-stepped mast took me on a transatlantic shake-down last year.
