as usual, it seems there are tradeoffs, with advantages and disadvantages to both.

on a deck stepped mast, the deck portion below the mast, supporting the weight of the mast as well as all the "sail load" or pressure when underway, has to be engineered and build well enough to support the stress on that portion of the deck. No doubt very easy to do. there are a few well known, highly regarded blue water cruisers that are stepped.
perhaps mike can direct you to the forum. i dont remember where it is. it was a very lively discussion indeed and hopefuly very informative.

Some argued that the deck stepped mast was preferable, since in a knockdown, it will be more likely to go over the side, without leaving a gaping hole in the boat.

Others argued that a keel stepped mast would actually survive a knockdown.

At the end of the day, there was no general conensus. As always with boats, you use what you have, and you will make do.

               Hi,
I am new to this group. I have reviewed several months of previous
comments and topics, Perhpas not enough, but I don't see anything
related. I am considering purchasing a 55 foot tayana cc cutter, with a
cabin stepped mast. I will use if for a few years in the pacific
northwest, coastal, straight of Georgia, etc. However after that may
want to go blue water cruising. Can anyone comment on the disadvantages
possible with the cabin stepped mast?
