    I think that I saw a lively discussion on this on the SSCA forum.
       
      Some argued that the deck stepped mast was preferable, since in a knockdown, it will be more likely to go over the side, without leaving a gaping hole in the boat.
       
      Others argued that a keel stepped mast would actually survive a knockdown.
       
      At the end of the day, there was no general conensus. As always with boats, you use what you have, and you will make do.
