If your interests are of a commercial nature then Sailtrac may not be for you and meet your purposes and as you state there are other options for promoting business interest in a public forum. For the average crusing sailor who wants to build custom web pages and share trips, photos, text, and mapping with friends and is not a technical guru it is a great free option with many great features. The privacy aspect is important to many and getting blogged by views can be annoying to many. Communications options are growing daily and it is a great thing...

I looked at Sailtrac and decided against it because I didn't find it
very user friendly. But my needs might be different than most. I'm
writing for a mostly non-sailing crowd and I needed something that
really looked good. I don't find the Sailtrac pages very attractive
and you have to do too much clicking to find profiles and logs and
photos and routes. I'm not interested in adding friends - I'll send
them the link and if they are interested, they can subscribe to the
blog. They can also easily browse and look for other people's blogs
    - which Sailtrac makes difficult. I've had people stop by my blog
and become fans of my books. That wouldn't happen on Sailtrac.

I write nautical suspense novels and I have a fan newsletter with
over 600 subscribers, most of whom are not sailors. I wanted to be
able to send them the link and have them able to open a really nice
looking page. And this is my business, so paying $99 for the premium
service was a no-brainer for me. I've paid lots more than that for
    ads in magazines, etc.

It's a wonderful world where we have so many choices for
communicating with friends and family while sailing.

    Fair winds!
