John,
I looked at Sailtrac and decided against it because I didn't find it
very user friendly. But my needs might be different than most. I'm
writing for a mostly non-sailing crowd and I needed something that
really looked good. I don't find the Sailtrac pages very attractive
and you have to do too much clicking to find profiles and logs and
photos and routes. I'm not interested in adding friends - I'll send
them the link and if they are interested, they can subscribe to the
blog. They can also easily browse and look for other people's blogs
- which Sailtrac makes difficult. I've had people stop by my blog
and become fans of my books. That wouldn't happen on Sailtrac.
I write nautical suspense novels and I have a fan newsletter with
over 600 subscribers, most of whom are not sailors. I wanted to be
able to send them the link and have them able to open a really nice
looking page. And this is my business, so paying $99 for the premium
service was a no-brainer for me. I've paid lots more than that for
ads in magazines, etc.
It's a wonderful world where we have so many choices for
communicating with friends and family while sailing.
Fair winds!
