    I think that "work quite well" is the key point here. With
    antennas, especially for receiving, there is no substitute
    for wire in the sky. Simplistically you could compare it
    to surface area, the more you have the more signal you
    will pluck out of the ether. On a sailboat you have a nice
    tall mast, there is very little point in using a 6 foot
    antenna. Keep one in the locker with the fishing gear
    though for emergencies incase the mast goes over the side.
    On a motor boat then yes by all means use a loaded
    vertical.
