[world-cruising] satphones and ssb antennas....

IMHO Each brings unique capabilities to the communication and safety of a
    vessel and her crew.

I believe you should carry both and I do. If you’re a long term same boat
owner and you’ve capitalized the cost it becomes a very cheap way to obtain
    solid communications.
SSB brings you the nets and gives you another ear on the world.

Sat phones bring you instant communication and high-speed data.

Satellites can malfunction, sunspots occur………nothing in any form of
communication is assured. With both on hand you have a better shot at
    communicating with the outside world.

I know it's not a option really when your floating around, but also hear of
people throwing over a copper wire into the drink over the side of the
    boat.

I know I have done the same thing, well kinda, while camping from the
car, either a proper stake into
the ground or run a long wire out over the round.
