I might add to this discussion that the large counterpoise is also
"conventional wisdom" that has been questioned by some experts. Rather than
do an expensive retrofit I followed the advice of Gordon West and used a
single through-hull as the RF ground. His contention is that with modern
antenna tuners that is sufficient and nearly as good as the conventional 100
sq. ft of copper strips. My figuring was that if it was not adequate I
could proceed from there. In fact, it appears to work just fine.

(RF ground) has more to do with the efficiency of an antenna than the
antenna itself (assuming adequate length, insulation, and tuning).
