Yes an uninsulated backstay probably has an effect on an additional wire run up for an antenna, But consider this....all the other uninsulated wires running up from deck level to the mast effect everything, even a backstay used as an antenna

I am sorry, I did not mean to upset anyone, just wanted to state some facts for people as most boater are not electronic experts...but having been in electronics since 1952, both commerical and as a hobby I do know antennas.

      1. IF you are using an insulagted backstay and it works....don't touch it.
      2. If your back stay is uninsulated and you are considering putting up an antenna, then consider a sep. wire....that is the smart thing to do. \\

But then each boater has his own conditions....I am now enroute to a per4sonal dxpedition on Johnston Island, then to Republic of Marshall Islands, Kiribita, Vanautu, etc....will be putting up temporary ham radio stations and antennas on many uninhabited atolls to provide congtacts for many hams.
Any questions ever about your ssb setup, give me an email...happy to provide you with my thought after 53 years in the industry.
