    Trish,

Bringing a boat into Canada will require both PST and GST. When you take
the registration change notice in, they'll notify both revenue agencies
which will promptly send you their bills. You can assign the boat a
value for tax purposes but should they check and it appears to them that
you're low, they'll set the price and tax accordingly (much higher).
BTW: It makes no difference if the boat originated in Canada and has
been out of the country for a number of years - you'll pay tax all over
again. You could sail it locally for up to 6 months before you change
the registration. Be aware as well that the boat will need to meet all
Canadian requirement once imported - life jackets and safety equipment,
holding tanks if applicable, etc. Not required if not importing it right
away, but it must meet the minimum standards of the country of
registration. Here in the Toronto area, they've been spot checking.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

    Mike

    Subject: [world-cruising] Boat registration

    Hello!

Can anyone tell me about changing the country of registration for a
    boat?

We are purchasing a boat (30' Nonsuch) within the next week or so . . .
    this
is a private deal, no broker involved . . . the current owner has just
    told
us that it is registered in Ireland. We are in Canada. The boat has
resided in Canada for the last 5 years, but they used it as a
    live-aboard in
    Ireland before that.

Can anyone tell me what will be involved in changing ownership? I don't
think we will have to pay duty or anything like that (I hope!) . . .
probably just a fee to change the registration?

Thanks so much for any input you can offer!!!

    Trish
