It seems that most of the beaches and harbors of the American VI's are controlled by the Federal Forestry and Parks, so its well maintained but very barren. For folks that want to TOTALLY get away, these are fine.
The ports of the BVI'S have more to offer, such as, restaurants, fuel, groceries, bars, etc. From what i gathered, the AVI's dont. Almost like primitive camping.
This was my impression and others may have a different oponion.
I would appreciate someone elses comments......

i would vote for the BVI's. i have sailed there and it is a great place for new sailors and the limited-in-experience. there are a lot of small islands with great harbors that are too small for the large cruise ships.
just next door a few miles to the east are the American Virgin Islands, all with in sight of the BVI.s. its not a bad thing to be close to an American state/territory.
i would be glad to go there again, anytime

We were thinking of the BVI because our research showed that the prevailing
winds keeps it a bit cooler than some of the other areas? also it is less
developed than many of the other Caribbean areas . . . but now we are
hearing that the last few years since the cruise ships have been going in it
is quite touristy and expensive.
So, we were thinking Belize . . . but it seems the sailing isn't so great
there because of all the reefs? and also it is very, very hot there?
I've heard maybe St Vincent? or Saba? but I can't seem to find much info
about those areas.
What about Trinidad? It is supposed to be out of the hurricane routes?
What about the Sea of Cortez? There doesn't seem to be too much sailing
around there . . .

BTW, we are in the PNW, so are thinking we'd fly down and buy a boat down
there as we really don't want to sail down the West coast and through the
Panama.
