Hello - I have had hydraulic steering on a Beneteau for five years and in that time it has been without any service problem and works really well with the autopilot. My main drawback is the lack of feel to the wheel - its always easy and you get no real feedback as you do with direct or cable steering. Its also quite spooky to see a course change made by the autopilot and the wheel does not rotate! Most important I am told is to check for leaks and keep the rams clean and lightly lubricated.
regards,
Alan

Subject: [world-cruising] Hydraulic steering
My husband is considering buying a 1987 boat with hydraulic steering and has no experience
with it. I'm scrambling to research. What are the pros and cons? What are *very* specific
problems to look out for? What are the issues with hydraulic steering and windvanes? Can
anyone weigh in with their experiences or recommend good reading (esp online, as we're in
Paris) on this topic? I'm looking for as much detail as possible here, and I appreciate any
insight.
Thank you,
Karen
