The drogue is your friend, don't leave home without it! I have ridden out
storms with a Jordan series drogue trailing off the stern of Kuan-Yin my
Searunner 37 and never felt in danger. Kind of a thrill to watch seas
break. really awesome!
It was the first piece of serious gear I bought for Oryoki.
I notice how the article praised technology (GPS EPIRB, it seems every one
had one. They even had a satellite phone!) but was absent on the
unpreparedness of the captain to have the boat outfitted for an ocean
passage. Gadgets may alert someone who will come out and save your life,
but good and proper gear will better prevent the disaster in the first place.
Captain dead, poor bugger, Coasties risk their lives to save them.
Gadgets get the praise. Cats (and all multi's) get the bad rap. And the
reporting makes no one the wiser. Damn shame all around.
