Chuck-----Had to reply to this one, the same exact thing happened to me, I won't go into any of the other details but it sounds like you've done the same thing I've done, turn that heartbreak situation into a positive one. I was working in Korea during 9-11 and was struck there for a week. I received an email from my long time girlfriend (of 10 years) that she was moving out and was sorry that I wasn't there to help. When I got back all I had was was my clothes, my TV and a lawn chair.... It took a while but I got over the hard times and went on to better things....(and not just another woman) I've been by myself for almost 5 years now and am finishing up my boat here in Florida. As soon as it's done, I'm gone, if by myself that's fine, if someone comes along, that's fine too. There are many wonderful companions throughout the world, maybe the right one will find me, but until then I'm going to finish what I want and go from there...

Mike -- sorry to hear it but same thing happened to me but i was
within months of leaving - we lived together for almost 8 years - took
sailing lessons together, seached and bought a boat together, planned
together, learned to work as a team, and while she was having trouble
working i supported her, and when she said she needed one more year
before going cruising i agreed and held off as i lost my job and
decided to retire early - then she got a job promotion and a 6 figure
income - when that occured she said bye bye as the money was more
important to her - i even took my time in selling the house and now
have to sell it in a down market -
but i did a few things right as the boat is able for short hand
sailing - but i had not prepared mentally to sail alone and now
working on that - i sail as much as i can single handed now to prep
    myself -
by the way my house just sold and i am trying to sell my furniture -
my boat, a Jeanneau DS40, is almost ready to go - just need to add
some solar panels and an ssb - i will go up the east coast to get out
of the hurricane area and then to the islands for the winter -
i know from wence you speak and can only say good luck with your boat
    search -
