Like maybe some of the Oysters and Swans.:) There are some very
expensive, very well-built boats that use deck stepped masts. It is
less expensive to build production boats with keel stepped masts. To
my admittedly limited knowledge all the best known production boats
are keel stepped. That doesn't mean that I would take a Hunter or
Catalina or many of the other production boats across an ocean. That
keel stepped mast would definitely not make me feel any safer in those
lightly built boats. The "safety" advantages of keel stepped vs deck
stepped comes down to personal preferences, just like every other
aspect of boats -- steel vs aluminum vs fiberglass vs wood vs full
keel vs fin keel vs. etc.......

There are many lightly built keel stepped boats just as there are many
heavily built deck stepped boats. This should not be a totally
limiting factor when considering a particular boat. There are a lot
of criteria to consider -- the total package, if you will.
