Barry, A full keel heavy boat just isn't going to motor against the wind as well as a light Irwin. BUT, you get that current on your side, and zoom! We have a 50' heavy displacement (60,000 lbs) Hudson and our 90 hp Lehman takes us 9.5 knots in good water, though the waterline length and displacement figure into the hull speed without nature's push. A tad slower if things blow against us. And the 120 may fight better, but there are limitations on what the engine can do. Go to www.force50.org where this is discussed among fat boat owners about this and all sorts of other topics.NormandieTo: world-cruising at yahoogroups dot comFrom: b dot w dot brazier at bigpond dot comDate: Wed, 11 Apr 2007 11:17:13 -0700Subject: Re: [world-cruising] Re: boat shopping & engines

I am thinking of buying a Hardin 45 but I am not sure of the best engine
size one of a boat that size should have.
I accompanied a Hardin 45 down the ICW from CT to Fl and they had trouble
making 5 kts against the wind in flat water. They had a 60HP diesel pushing
the 30,000 lb boat with 13.5' beam. I was able to make 7.5 kts with my 30 hp
diesel in a 39' Irwin weighing 16,000 lb.

Do you think Hardin 45 are under powered or is more likely that boat needed
a better match of prop size/pitch.
I am a bit inclined to think boats of the Hardin 45 size need about 120 hp.

    Regards
    Barry
