My boat has a keel stepped mast, and it does not leak. Of course every
five years or so I have to renew the mast boot, but since I sue white
shower curtian material and sealant, it is not a problem.

But is it stronger? Hard to say. Stiffer maybe. Stronger than a poorly
designed system maybe. More or less likely to leave something left?
Don't know, I have a spinnaker pole I could use, and would try like heck
to keep the mast, but who knows what will happen at that time?

I have seen some very robustly built deck stepped rigs. -Ken
