We have owned both keel stepped and deck stepped, and will never own a
keel stepped boat again. Water will find its way down that mast
regardless of what you do. Over time, it does become a leak problem.
Our current deck stepped boat is a totally dry interior boat.
That reason alone was enough to make us converts. Originally we felt
as you do.
Besides that, the cruising grounds you describe are basically island
hopping. Even a Hunter can do that safely as long as you watch the
weather before venturing from one island to the next.
