Life gives you many opportunities; when one door closes, another opens. In
this particular case, the "opportunity" really isn't there. While the
cruise itself may be a once in a lifetime opportunity, the timing is wrong,
and the schedule is too short. Susan, who is an experienced cruiser, knows
very well that Mother Nature sets the schedule. It is impossible to cover
the distance from Corpus Christi to Seattle in 10 weeks in a S2 9.2C. The
math is pretty simple:
Corpus to Panama = 1540 NM
Panama to Seattle = 4044 NM
Total = 5584 NM (This is the straight-line distance that a powered ship
would travel).
Figure 2 weeks in Panama awaiting transit permission.
That leaves 8 weeks for the trip, or a 100 NM/day average every day. No
time remains for provisioning, fuel, weather delays, crew rest, crew
exchange, clearing customs, etc.
Add in the fact that the timing coincides with hurricane season in both the
Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, and the prevailing winds are directly
on the bow from mid-Mexico to Cape Flattery, WA.
This voyage is an "opportunity" along the lines of going over Niagara Falls
in a barrel is an "opportunity". It's suicide.
OTOH, truck the boat to Seattle and recommission, or buy a boat there, and
use the 10 weeks to cruise the beautiful Puget Sound or the Inside Passage
between Vancouver and mainland Canada. That's a cruise that can be done
more casually, more safely, and will be equally unforgettable.
