Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum, but I've enjoyed browsing through and reading
through all the great info here. I'm looking for an opinion from some
experianced cruisers regarding the following:
I'm fairly close to purchasing a very well-equipped 30' S2 9.2 Center
cockpit sailboat in Corpus Christi, TX. For my background, I'm the
Commanding Officer of the 87' Coast Guard Cutter in Port Aransas; I've
spent the last 5 years professionally at sea in all kinds of weather
aboard sturdy ships, but my sailing experiance is limited.
I'll be stationed here in Corpus for about another year, then I expect
to be transferred to Seattle, WA. If it comes down to it, I could
just have the boat shipped, but my two best friends and I will all be
well positioned next summer for a far more ambitious plan: to take
about 10 weeks off out of our lives and sail the boat from Corpus
Christi to Seattle via the Canal, about 7000 miles I believe. The
timeframe is about 07 July - 20 Sept
Is this a fool's errand in such a small boat or Mission Accomplished,
given the proper preparation? I've seen and heard all sorts of
stories of people circumnavigating in boats much smaller than 30', so
it should certainly be possible. I'm planning on staying fairly close
to the coast except for the initial shot across the Gulf of Mexico
from Corpus around the Yucatan.
Has anyone here made this trip? What sorts of things should we be
especially concerned about? And is 10 weeks realistically long enough
to make the trip?
Appreciate your thoughts,
Brandon
