THESE lights are ONLY on MEGA Yachts with very very tall masts they are not
on your average sail boat with a 40/50/60 foot mast typically 100+ foot
sailing boats - anyone here with one of these?
so panic not
There is a yacht sits at anchor fairly regularly in St Thomas USVI (cant
remember the anchorage name) but it is directly opposite Christmas Cove on Grt
St James west of Current Cut it has a mast head red and two red on each side
of the mast at each of its four sets of spreaders i have seen this boat there
for five years now so this is nothing new. This mast is hundreds maybe a
thousand or more of feet below the hills on St Thomas and due to these hills at
the end of the runway at Charlotte Amalie (which is about 6 miles away) the
planes have to do a HARD R/H Climbing turn as they take off from St Thomas so
this is nowhere near the runway the approach or the flightpath for take off.
for those who think mast height is not a problem

Of course - BUT how many of those places are ANCHORAGES??Of course
has answered that. If you give me THREE anchorages where such lights
would have to be displayed on ORDINARY SAILBOATS such as most of us
have with masts less than 20 meters or 65 feet (I know that's not an
exact correspondence, but I think it is pretty close), then I will
shut up about this.
Otherwise I ***DO*** think this is NOT a legal or necessary for safety
of aircraft requirement and is just some kind of sales scam.
What they do on mega-yachts or even Navy ships is not relevant.
Although if the megayacht is NOT in a place where they are a hazard to
aircraft then they also ought NOT to be displaying a red light - like
if they are anchored at an island with no airport.
If there are a significant number of these places, then they need to
be referenced on the charts AND there needs to be a prohibition from
using red lights for ranges in the vicinity of those places.
Also the COLREGS need to be modified to take these hazards from the
air into account.
