Of course - BUT how many of those places are ANCHORAGES???? No one
has answered that. If you give me THREE anchorages where such lights
would have to be displayed on ORDINARY SAILBOATS such as most of us
have with masts less than 20 meters or 65 feet (I know that's not an
exact correspondence, but I think it is pretty close), then I will
shut up about this.
Otherwise I ***DO*** think this is NOT a legal or necessary for safety
of aircraft requirement and is just some kind of sales scam.
What they do on mega-yachts or even Navy ships is not relevant.
Although if the megayacht is NOT in a place where they are a hazard to
aircraft then they also ought NOT to be displaying a red light - like
if they are anchored at an island with no airport.
If there are a significant number of these places, then they need to
be referenced on the charts AND there needs to be a prohibition from
using red lights for ranges in the vicinity of those places.
Also the COLREGS need to be modified to take these hazards from the
air into account.
