Before sailing my boat to Portugal a couuple of years ago I debated
getting SSB, mostly for the weatherfax.
I didn't and used NOAA AM radio for weather on the crossing--not
much use to a slow moving sailboat. (Also Herb Hilgenberg's
Southbound II, but there weren't many reporting boats in our area.)
In Europe I use my Blackberry for e mail and to go the the good ol'
Weather Channel for forecasts. Spanish and Portuguese Navtex
forecasts are usually only about 36 hours out and the Weather
Channel forecasts for one week. Most towns where I have been have
internet cafes--about one euro for seven minutes fo computer use--
and there are lots of good sites for more detailed weather info,
like weatheronline.com Marinas also post synoptic charts every day.
This patchwork system has been OK so far but it may not work too
well for fast-moving systems like mistrals in the central Med or
hurricanes in in the Caribbean . . .
