To reply to Roy' s queries: I'm currently cruising down the west
coast of North America, having left San Juan Island WA last August
and am presently anchored off a surf beach about 30 miles N of
Zihuatanejo. I've had crew for the Friday Harbor-San Francisco and
San Diego-La Paz legs, otherwise have been singlehanding. I aim to
spend April and May in Costa Rica and Panama and reach Bahia de
    Caraquez, Ecuador, sometime in June.

Everyone has his/her own idea of what "basic" is, but I would
nominate my autopilot and my pressure cooker as the two most valuable
pieces of gear for long passages. If disaster were to strike and I
had to deploy my life raft, I suspect that item would quickly move to
    #1 on the list.

    Cheers,
    Phil
