The only passage we made with a working HF radio was from Moorea to Hawaii. By the end of the passage I'd developed a love hate relationship with the daily com. schedule and the available information. We were able to patch through direct to NOAA weather but their information was largely useless because of it's inaccuracy. The daily com. schedule got to be onorous. Really didn't want to make the contacts after the novelty wore off in the first week and felt a great sense of relief when we signed off the sched. a day out of Hilo. The obligation of making the scheduled contact cut into my enjoyment and work of the passage.
I have to balance the ability to contact people around the world with the obligation to contact them. Don't believe that I'd set up a a schedule on any future passage. The radio will be there if it's needed but wouldn't obligate myself to using it. Our passages without a working radio seemed so much more enjoyable.
The radio was invaluable when we needed to guide friends to our anchorage or order parts but the morning net got to be a pain. Especially when the net administrator nearly sicked the French Coast Guard on us when we took a couple days break from the boat and went hiking. When we didn't show up on the informal morning chats a number of people assumed the worst and wanted to call out the posse. It took the spontaneity out of cruising and needlessly alarmed people when we didn't do what they expected.
Aloha
