Actually... I'd love to own a nice steel, square rigged ship.
Maybe once I win the lottery

IMO It depends on what you mean by modern conveniences.
GPS.. I'll take it thank you very much... along with a sextant for backup.
AIS ? The jury is out....

    But..
I rather go outside and see 'reality' as opposed to watching it on TV
A/C ? I'd rather relax on deck, under an awning if needed.
sat phone ? sorry I've gone sailing... leave a msg until i get back.

It's all just more crap to fix, consume power, and eat money that companies
    would like you to spend.

The more complex a system the more potential problems and costs you can have,
NASA=An expensive pressurized pen that writes in space
USSR=A pencil that writes in space.
Same functionality.... which would you rather have ?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people who actually sail their boats, (as
opposed to using them as a damp, cramped version of a mobile home that rarely
leaves the dock), are willing to almost spend more time paying for, and
repairing a bunch of extraneous gear than spending time sailing.
Then again... lots of people do that on land... they spend half their time
acquiring stuff to stuff their homes and the other half fixing and eventually
    replacing it.

    Cheers !
    Roy
