I don't believe that is true. I know that sometimes people are not
necessarily deliberately inconsiderate, but they are clueless or just
don't think.
The people who do HTML on a text list like this, for instance
(although in some versions of aol there seems to be no way to avoid
adding a small amount of this).
And the people who fail to trim the 'footers' about the group which
accumulate with each post and which add a great deal of bandwidth
without adding any helpful information.

When I go out on the boat where I have limited bandwidth, I put this
list and all the yahoo lists to 'nomail'.
