The Pardey's have a video/DVD out about how they handle our sized boats
in heavy weather.
They use a para-anchor that is set off the bow, but tethered by an aft
cleated line, to hold the vessel at an angle to the wind and seas (ie
heave-to alignment, neither ahull nor bow-on). They maintain that this
is both the ideal angle for taking seas, but more importantly that their
slow leeward drift leaves a calmer patch to windward. Like spreading oil
was once supposed to do.
disclaimer: I haven't tried it myself.
