If you want to lose your rudder, by all means use a Para sea anchor off the bow. The boat, at some time, will be out of phase with the waves. When that happens, tension on the line will go slack allowing the boat to be thrown stern first into the trough of a wave. Tremendous pressures on the rudder that it was not designed to withstand. Read Adler Coles book and notice how many lost rudders there were on boats that streamed warps or sea anchors off the bow. Of course it depends on wave period, wave heights and period, and wind strength and duration but it seems foolish to tether off the bow.

              Thanks Peter.
I have looked at a jordan series drogue. I know I could be wrong, but
everything I've read and know about my little boat has led me to
believe that I would be safer in a big blow with a para-anchor
deployed off the bow. Perhaps I would reconsider if I did not have a
full-keel monohull. First mate even offered to do the sewing while I
was off working nights and I was tempted to put her to work! :)
Appreciate the links. Found myself rereading Mr Jordan's arguements.
He is convincing. Makes me think that maybe I should be studying
    German :)
    cheers
