Actually boomed staysails have been around quite a long time. Donald Street
writes of how his Iolaire came with one, and that boat was built before we
were born. He also writes very persusaively of his joy on the day when he
finally threw the boom overboard!
Like everything else on a boat, headsail booms are a tradeoff. I'd put them
in the same category as in-mast or behind-mast mainsail furling...something
added to ease sail handling that has a number of performance drawbacks.
