I overheard an exchange on the Grenada VHF cruisers net the other
morning that exemplifies exactly the recent topic on this group
about leaving in bad weather.
There was another tropical wave expected to pass through the area
last Monday. Both the SSB morning weather guys (Chris and Eric)
said it would be best to wait at least one day to leave to head
towards Trinidad or VZ. The local VHF weather guy also said would
be best to wait at least one day to leave. Not severe weather, but
bad enough that you wouldn't want to experience it on a sailboat
unless necessary.
When they did their usual "any new arrivals and any boats departing"
query on the cruisers net, a woman popped up and said they were
leaving for Trinidad that day. The net moderator said, "maybe you
didn't hear the weather report today; bad weather is expected and it
should be better weather if you can just wait 24 hours."
The lady replied, "Oh, half our crew are Scottish. We are used to
beating into the wet and rough. It's just what we do."
Now, granted that they almost certainly would be just fine doing
that 85-miles during a tropical wave especially since half of them
are accustomed to sailing in far heavier weather (with cold added).
But why experience a rough passage when could wait just 24 hours and
have a much more pleasant and safer sail.
Just my 2 cents this morning.
