Actually Judy, they were only 290 miles out of Chatham, so about 310 miles out of Newport. That means that they were out since probably TUesday morning, a bit more than 2 days.

Ahmet,
One of the news articles you have quoted states that they were
enroute to Newport from Europe, so they were nearing the end of
their voyage. Maybe they were overtired and that affected their
critical thinking. We don't know what their trip was like during
the few days before this experience.
Sounds like they just got caught in heavy weather during that
passage. Likely they did not have access to reliable weather data
and did not know to alter their course, or they simply were not
adequately prepared for this voyage. I'm sure you know that there
are any number of weather services available via SSB that would have
notified them via email of impending bad weather if they had
subscribed to such a service.
The actual speed of the wind doesn't really make much difference.
Weather was obviously too heavy for that boat, with that crew,
period.
As to some earlier speculation of possible insurance fraud, that is
extremely, extremely unlikely. This type insurance fraud might
involve 1 or 2 people; extremely unlikely to involve 4 people,
IMHO.
Judy
