    Thanks for the links, Ahmet. Please note that a Coast Guard helicopter was
    not engaged in searching for Free Spirit. The Jayhawk was only used to
    hoist three Canadians from Dads Dream and take them ashore. The search for
    Free Spirit was conducted by a fixed wing jet that operates at much higher
    altitudes. No way that aircraft knows or can report surface winds with
    accuracy.

    Seas in that area are as much defined by the bottom as by the weather
    conditions. 200 miles south of Halifax is close enough to Georges Banks
    that there could have been some very nasty seas kicked up that would have
    been disproportionate to the wind speed or fetch. But that same distance in
    a slightly different direction puts the boat in very deep water with fewer
    hazards.

    The second news item you quoted seems to have invented the wind speed. They
    certainly don't attribute it to any creditible source. Not surprising for
    tabloid journalism; they could have equally easily written that Free Spirit
    was carried off by a UFO.
