Bryan, if you have 40-50 knot winds on the shore, 200 miles away from the center, you will very likely have gusts much higher in the center of the storm.
The below links (and accompanied text) is what the high wind reports are based on.
It is interesting that there is so little information about the actual conditions.
Nonetheless, if the major interest in this entire subject is weather all the wind reports are credible, that is an entirely different subject matter.
If the coast guard helicopter crew says that the winds were between 50 and 90 knots, an airport 200 miles north from the center reports 40 knot gusts, I find it probable that it has happened.

The boat, Free Spirit, was heading from Europe to Newport when it ran into trouble about 200 nautical miles south of Halifax, where seas were reported to be 23 to 30 feet and the winds 50 to 90 knots, the Coast Guard said.

The search was hampered by bad weather on Thursday but the search continued on Friday with the coastguard searching over 6,500 nautical square miles with no sign of the crew.
Britons Richard White, 24, Jacek Bielecki, 56, teenage son Jack Bielecki, 19, and US citizen Molly Finn, 21, were aboard the yacht.
It is believed that the Free Spirit got caught in winds as high as 115mph and 30ft waves being caused by remnants of tropical storm Alberto. The Foreign Office told media that they were 'concerned about the safety' of the yacht's crew.

That's a 40 knot gust in Halifax and about a 50 knot gust "observed in the
news report". Both are a long way from hurricane strength and even longer
from "100 MPH winds". Were the news reports based upon someone's actual
recorded data, or simply taking someone's inflated description at face
value?
