    An interesting thread

    We do the following
70% Cash - split 10% USD and 90% Local Currency
30% Travelers cheques - USD and Sterling

Both items we split so I hold half and my wife hold the other half.

When my half is close to being spent - we go in search of an ATM machine
(Cirrus network seems to be the best).

Backup system is Visa Card - I generally write to them when we are
heading some place new to say "we will be in X for 4 weeks - do not
panic if the card is being used". We did initially have some problems,
as our "card usage did not match previous spending patterns" - a
frightening concept if you care to think about it.

Next Backup System in Western Union - which is expensive (about 8% of
funds will be charged) but instant. We have only used this twice.

Dealing with Bank for paying of bills is done by Letter - but we have no
monthly commitments back in the UK. I do not use Internet Banking,
instead I have a prior arrangement with my Bank that I can phone them up
and ask for a balance over the phone. Any funds transfers I then do by
    letter.

We are early 40's - have 51ft Steel Roberts.

    Good luck in your trip

         Tim
