and of course there are those of us who have driven for many years on the Los Angeles freeways and can verify for those close encounters......

Don't you find it curious that the number of posts to various sailing lists
warning of the dangers of "semi-submerged containers" far outstrips the
numbers where people actually *see* something? And the numbers where people
claim to *hit* something are practically non-existant. IMO, the danger of
actually hitting one of these containers is very small, probably far less
than the danger of being struck by lightning. The stories of containers are
a bit like the stories of pirates. We all know they're out there, and we
all have third-, fourth-, or tenth-hand accounts of someone who actually
encountered one, or maybe we all read the same story in "Cruising World".
But the numbers of people who have these encounters are an incredibly small
percentage of those who are out cruising.

I'm not saying don't be vigilant; I'm just saying don't be overly frightened
by stories that have been repeated by people who have not had these
experiences. Chances are the stories are highly embellished in their
      repitition.
