    Don't you find it curious that the number of posts to various sailing lists
    warning of the dangers of "semi-submerged containers" far outstrips the
    numbers where people actually *see* something? And the numbers where people
    claim to *hit* something are practically non-existant. IMO, the danger of
    actually hitting one of these containers is very small, probably far less
    than the danger of being struck by lightning. The stories of containers are
    a bit like the stories of pirates. We all know they're out there, and we
    all have third-, fourth-, or tenth-hand accounts of someone who actually
    encountered one, or maybe we all read the same story in "Cruising World".
    But the numbers of people who have these encounters are an incredibly small
    percentage of those who are out cruising.

    I'm not saying don't be vigilant; I'm just saying don't be overly frightened
    by stories that have been repeated by people who have not had these
    experiences. Chances are the stories are highly embellished in their
    repitition.
