    FWIW, last year on one of the local sailing list serves I read an
    account of sailing back to the Chesapeake from the Caribbean, during
    which they passed close by a large, semi submerged (ie awash) object,
    about 200 E of Hatteras. They did not see it until they were passing it
    about 30ft off the side.
